Age and frailty in chronic pain

Chronological age alone does not explain why some individuals age in good health while others become increasingly vulnerable to disease, disability, and death. This doctoral thesis examines frailty as an expression of biological age and its relationship with chronic pain, one of the most common and complex conditions affecting older adults. Drawing on scientific evidence and clinical practice, it illustrates how biological vulnerability shapes the experience of pain and how both processes interact to influence health and quality of life. By integrating insights from geriatric medicine and pain research, the work offers a more individualized perspective on ageing and supports a truly person-centred approach to care.
